At Del Mar Academy we earnestly value our community. We want to be a center for positive change and our vision is to provide our school population with the means and the motivation to improve themselves and their communities.
Through community service projects our students learn the importance of their involvement in the community and the power of their volunteerism.
Children of all ages do fundraising activities, from cookie sales to small sport tournaments, to gather funds for purchasing needed materials for our adopted sister school, “Santa Marta”.
Our environmental committee is extending the campaigns created by our children to all the local schools in the area. Children in Nosara are singing along with our “No seas un Bichin Basurín song” (Don’t be a littler bug). This campaign focuses on teaching children the importance of not littering and keeping their country clean.
Our Scholarship committee raises funds to allow local children to attend our school. The Committee sponsors a yard sale once or twice a year which provides the local community with very affordable clothing, toys and housing supplies.
This is just the beginning. We want to do much more. We are in the process of expanding the service learning projects, so that we can instill volunteering and community outreach as in integral and essential component of our educational curriculum.
We believe that volunteering teaches students the importance of giving back. More than any classroom experience can offer; community service builds character, shows leadership, helps others, and prepares children for life.
DMA’s positive impact in our community´s environmental health
As a way to alleviate Nosara´s waste management problem, Del Mar Academy´s Environmental Committee constructed a large compost bin for composting organic waste produced both at the school and from our families’ homes. After several months of implementation, it has proven to be a very successful project that now produces rich fertilizer ideal for organic gardens. The committee wants to further expand the project by receiving all the organic waste from people in the community who do not have an appropriate way to dispose of it.
Composting is nature's way of recycling by biodegrading organic waste (i.e. food waste, manure, leaves, grass trimmings, paper, wood, feathers, crop residue etc.), and turning it into a valuable organic fertilizer.
Since more than 50% of the waste stream is organic matter, composting can play a significant role in diverting waste from our dump, thereby conserving space and reducing the production of lixiviates and methane gas.
The DMA´s Environmental Committee is selling buckets to bring the compost from home. Here is a list of organic material that you can and cannot bring. For more information please contact Jessica Sheffield at jessisheffield@yahoo.com
